I find it really hard to explain certain parts of the LOTR movies to my casual-fan friends without accidentally falling into a hole of Silm lore

Like, they’re confused enough, I won’t help by bringing up the fact that Sauron, Gandalf and the Balrog are all kind of the same species

my casual-fan friends now know enough from the Hole of Silm Lore to almost get away with pretending they’ve read it themselves

Sometimes I watch LotR with my mom and she’ll ask something about the plot.   Like, “Why do elves and dwarves not like each other?”

And I’m like, “Well…”

And my mom says, “If it’s going to be a really long explanation, then never mind.”
